Powers (Short Film)

"Powers" is my newest short film starring Michael J Sanchez, Frantzy Moreau & Dave Jia. A Sci-Fi Comedy about a guy that has a close encounter after a drunk night out with the guys and discovers he has super powers.

After spending a lot of time working on music videos and prepping scripts, I was itching to make a new film. One night I went home and sat at my computer and decided to let my ideas flow and in an hour and half I had "Powers"

(Left to Right: Frantzy, Dave, Michael & Chris looking at shots not the set)

As most writers might know the hardest part can sometimes be finishing or knowing where to go with your story. I decided to just keep writing, no matter what I would find a way to get the characters out of this situation. This being a comedy allowed a lot of freedom, I wanted to really just push past the cliche sci-film and not focus on the special effects but more of the topic of power structures and the importance of balance in nature & government, with a satirical edge of course.

We began shooting in late January and were excited to have a premiere date in April at the Ocinema theater in Wynwood. The premiere went great and our cast showed up and handed out posters as we showed the film to an audience of young independent filmmakers.

("Powers" took home BEST SCREENPLAY)

Im proud to have been able to work with this ambitious collection of actors and create a fun film with a message. My attempt was to make something that would inspire others to break out of their comfort zones and take chances. Also to make something that would comically convey the attitude that we all have the power to do good in ways both big and small.

I will be uploading a behind the scenes video featuring deleted scenes and bloopers in the next few days so If you haven't already subscribe to my page at youtube.com/rebelfilmmakersENT and make sure to LIKE & COMMENT on Powers. Your feedback is always greatly appreciated by me and the cast, as indie filmmakers and actors those comments give us hope and guidance to continue making great films.

Look forward to a brand new film coming in October! "McClintock" more info soon!

Shuttle Life - Slabbin (Music Video)

Here's the newest music video I shot for Shuttle Life members Robbie Dreadeyez & Strenph. The guys were very open to do something creative and different and step outside of the Wynwood Art District look of most music videos.

They played me many songs and allowed me to choose which ever I felt the most comfortable with, "Slabbin" was a track off their 2013 mixtape "The Andromeda Strain" which I felt had a hip-hop jungle vibe with a MF Doom type beat.

I knew it would be fun track to experiment with using different images to juxtaposition the song and create a eerie alien vibe. I'm looking forward to working with them again in the near future.

Canvas (of No Fiction) - 4-D (Music Video)

Drift into 4-D!!!

Here's the release of Canvas from No Fiction' first solo music video off his 2014 mixtape "Unfinished Business". When Canvas approached me to shoot this video the first thing I asked is "What is 4-D?" he told me "4-D is the dimension after 3-D which is typically called Time"

The concept we decided to convey was one of getting lost in the studio while time and space moves around you.

I was real excited to use our color filters to create the original lighting setup and to also be able to have the band play live in the video. (Clip of live performance below)

If you would like to hear Canvas "Unfinished Business" Mixtape you can download it here or stream it on Soundcloud. You can also follow him on Twitter @ItstheCanvas

New Short Film: Powers (Teaser)

Lately I haven't kept my word on updating this blog as much as I had wanted to. Back in December I was finishing up a Documentary for Nagchampa (Lowaletta) (which I will be writing about in a separate post), editing a music video for Canvas (which should be release soon) and I spontaneously decided to start writing.

What came from this was "Powers". In the last few months I had been working on music videos and documentaries while working on a script for the "Basketball Friends Movie", but this process was taking a while and I had noticed alot of people asking me when I was gonna be shooting a new film.

Writing Powers was very fun and an exercise in trying to work through the most creative ambitious ideas I could think of and challenge myself to finish it in one sitting. The script was written one night after work in about an hour and a half. The next day we casted all our main actors and I began to plan a schedule of when we could begin shooting.

I'll share the rest of the story at another time. But for now enjoy the 1st look at one of my most ambitious films yet. I never saw myself working on a sci-fi film but I think people will love the approach I took to make the genre my own. Im more than half way done editing now and I want to be done this month (February) and start screening it locally while sending it off to festivals.

This project has inspired me. Taking such ambitious mental images and bringing them into reality was extremely rewarding and I want to keep this momentum going through 2015 with more new films!

David Smith - Real No More (Music Video)

"Real No More" is the latest video from Overtown born rapper David Smith. David, is a friend of mine and we've shot many videos together in the past year. His debut mixtape "OVERTOWN" was released back in July and he's already set to drop his follow up "Vintage" in the upcoming year!

While in Overtown filming documentary footage, we had heard one of the neighbors "Mr. Bill" had been gundowned the previous night, this news shocked David as he had known him as a kid saying "he was a good man, he used to fix kids bikes".

A week later he had told me he wrote and produced a knew song and would be coming over to record it. Once I heard the line "Killed Mr. Bill on his porch" I knew he had touched into something real, something that would connect with his audience and something that would "need a video"

David had told me he had got a girl that was really good with make-up and he wanted to use her in the video to portray "death on my shoulder". When I had seen the great make-up and contact lenses I knew that her involvement would give this video the originality it needed, but my worry was how were we gonna shoot this demon in a graveyard with no permission? like most things we just went out there and did it.

When shooting we did get stopped by the Cemetery's worker which said "You have to ask permission.. but if your just taking pictures I'll allow it" we continued filming. But the random Miami rain had other plans. We did the most we could and I knew the slow-motion and color correction would make this video look great and the rain would probably just add to the dramatic feel (which it did) so we wrapped.

The next shots would all be at night, we waited to receive the flares we would use. The flares added a great red color and dramatic lighting, when using them they dispelled a powerful smoke which was hard not the breathe in, but still we shot and the shots came out great. We shot in the heart of Overtown and everyone was excited to be in the video. Once we wrapped David talked to a few of the guys explaining his inspiration for the song, which they all understood very well and they encouraged him to continue pushing, in reply he responded "Most Definitely".

When editing this video I took time to make sure that it was not only cinematic, but different. I wanted people not only see another rap video, but feel the horror of living in an environment where good people could lose their lives any minute for no reason. I hope I accomplished that goal but either way knowing that we could impact a few people means alot.

Nagchampa13 (Lowaletta) - Poshlion (Music Video)

Here's a music video I directed for Nagchampa13, a Miami rapper who also goes under the name "Lowaletta" this is the 3rd video I've shot for him. It was a great experience to go out to the Redland's and shoot in the beautiful scenery. A couple days earlier Naggy sent me the song and told me he wanted the video to be "very organic"

We met up with one of Naggy's longtime collaborator's "Strenph" from "Shuttle Life" and the video was coming out very "Posh" but while filming I had asked Naggy to try out a shot standing on the go-cart. (This shot was the one with him holding the sunflower)

When getting off, he jumped backwards and fell strait into a drain hole in the ground causing him to lose his left converse shoe and it took 3 people to pull him out. Luckily, he was not hurt and upon returning home he found he had a extra left converse shoe sitting in the closet.

Swagger!
